Modules

01Planning a Trip

A trip that is planned is a trip that is calmer. Most of the anxiety of getting somewhere new comes from not knowing — the route, the time it takes, the cost, or what to do if something goes wrong. Planning answers those questions before you leave the house.

02Using Public Transport Safely

Public transport is the most independent way to get around, and it is a skill made of small, learnable parts: finding the stop, checking the service, boarding, paying, knowing your stop, and getting off. Travel training practises each part on real routes.

03Finding & Joining Community Activities

Community activities are the reason to make the trip. The best ones are built around something you already enjoy, happen at a regular time, and are close enough that going is easy. This module is about finding them and getting through the door.

04Volunteering & Giving Back

Volunteering is one of the most powerful things a person can do for their own wellbeing — it provides routine, purpose, connection and a sense of being useful, and it is a well-trodden bridge towards paid work. It is also structured: there is a role, a time, a supervisor, and people who expect you.

Who it’s for

For people who want to get out more — to appointments, activities, friends or volunteering — and would like the confidence and skills to do it safely. Travel training happens on real routes with an IMHC trainer, building from a supported trip towards independent travel where that is the goal.

Questions

What is travel training?

Supported practice on real routes with an IMHC trainer and assessor — from a fully supported trip to travelling with reducing support, at your pace. Support is reduced only when travel is safe and consistent, and the assistance you need is recorded honestly at every stage.
